When you're trusting a company to design and install the security for your building, "approved" and "certified" get used a lot. NSI Gold is one of the few marks that genuinely stands behind those words, but it's worth understanding what it actually involves.
What is the NSI?
The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is the UK's leading certification body for the security and fire protection industries. It was formed in 2001 from the merger of NACOSS and the Inspectorate of the Security Industry and it independently audits the companies it certifies against recognised British and European standards. Crucially, it is third-party certification: a company cannot simply award the badge to itself.
Gold vs Silver
The NSI runs more than one level of approval. NSI Gold is the highest tier. On top of the technical certification that a Silver-approved company holds, Gold additionally requires the business to operate a fully audited ISO 9001 quality management system, aligned to the NSI's own Quality Schedule. In plain terms, Gold assesses not just whether a company can install to standard, but whether the whole business is run to a consistent, documented standard of quality.
What gets audited
NSI Gold approval covers the design, installation and maintenance of security systems, intruder alarms, CCTV surveillance and access control, to the relevant standards. Approval isn't a one-off: companies are re-audited on an ongoing basis and any shortfalls have to be corrected to keep the certification. It's a continuing commitment, not a certificate that sits in a drawer.
Why it matters to you
- Police response. Police forces operate alarm response policies that rely on systems installed and maintained by recognised, certified companies.
- Insurance. Many insurers specify, or offer better terms for, alarm and security systems fitted by an NSI-approved installer.
- Accountability. Independent, repeated audits mean there is a recognised body holding the installer to a standard, not just the installer's own word.
- Consistency. The quality-management requirement means the same standards apply to your project as to every other, from the first survey to long-term maintenance.
